Hyperthermia in Chennai Summers: What You Must Know

Chennai summers are no ordinary heat. When temperatures cross 40°C with high humidity, your body's cooling system can shut down – leading to a dangerous condition called hyperthermia. Here's what every Chennai resident needs to know to stay safe.

Understanding Hyperthermia

What Is Hyperthermia?

Hyperthermia occurs when your body absorbs more heat than it can release. Unlike fever (which is caused by illness), hyperthermia happens when the environment itself overwhelms your body's natural cooling ability. In Chennai, the deadly combination of extreme heat and high humidity makes sweating – your body's main way to cool down – far less effective.

Left untreated, hyperthermia can progress from mild discomfort to a life-threatening emergency within hours.

Know the Progression

The 3 Stages of Heat-Related Illness

Heat illness follows a clear progression. Recognising each stage early can save a life.

1

Stage 1 — Heat Cramps

Mild

Painful muscle spasms, usually in the legs or abdomen, caused by loss of salt and fluids through sweating. This is the earliest warning sign your body is struggling with the heat.

2

Stage 2 — Heat Exhaustion

Moderate

Heavy sweating, rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, nausea, and feeling faint. Body temperature rises to 38–40°C. Rest and rehydration are urgently needed at this stage.

3

Stage 3 — Heat Stroke

Severe / Emergency

Body temperature exceeds 40°C. Sweating stops completely. The person becomes confused, loses consciousness, and organs including the brain and kidneys begin to fail. This is a medical emergency – call for help immediately.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Certain people are much more vulnerable to heat illness during Chennai summers:

  • People with diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or heart failure
  • The elderly and young children
  • Outdoor workers
  • Those taking diuretics, beta-blockers, or anticholinergic medications

If you or someone you care for falls into any of these groups, take extra precautions during April through June – Chennai's peak heat months.

Early Warning Signs – Don't Ignore These

Catch heat illness early by watching for these symptoms:

  • Headache — a throbbing or dull head pain developing in the heat
  • Reduced urination — dark yellow or very little urine is a sign of dehydration
  • Dizziness or near-fainting — feeling lightheaded when standing up
  • Excessive thirst and dry mouth — your body demanding more fluids
  • Muscle cramps — especially in the calves or abdomen

Any of these during outdoor activity means: move to a cool area and drink fluids immediately. If symptoms don't improve quickly, seek medical care.

Stay Safe

How to Prevent Heat Illness in Chennai

Stay Hydrated

Drink water or ORS regularly, even when not thirsty. Aim for at least 2–3 litres on hot days.

Avoid Peak Heat Hours

Stay indoors between 11 AM and 4 PM when temperatures and UV levels are highest.

Wear Light, Loose Clothing

Light-coloured cotton fabric helps the body breathe. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+).

Use Electrolyte Drinks

Coconut water, lemon water with salt and sugar, or commercial ORS replace lost sodium and minerals.

Never Leave Anyone in a Parked Car

Temperatures inside a closed car can reach 60°C+ within minutes.

Check on Vulnerable Neighbours

The elderly and those living alone are at high risk during Chennai heatwaves.

Emergency Warning

Seek Emergency Care Immediately If You Notice:

Body temperature above 104°F / 40°C
Stopped sweating despite being in the heat
Confusion or disorientation
Loss of consciousness
Seizures
Skin that is hot and dry

Do not wait – go to the nearest emergency room or call Newgen Hospital immediately.
